Fauquier Schools to Notify Parents When Library Books Are Checked Out

With Fauquier County students back in classes, parents will notice something different this school year. They will be alerted when their children check out school library books, Fauquier Times reports.

Last year, parents opted in to be alerted. Fauquier County Public Schools changed the policy to alert all parents after it took so much time for librarians to determine whether someone had opted in.

The decision to alert parents came because parents wanted more control over what their children were reading. Parents worried their kids would have access to sexually explicit materials or reading considered inappropriate.

The alerts will be in addition to any other alerts parents received from their children’s schools.

In 2022, the Fauquier chapter of Moms for Liberty challenged some books and how library materials are reviewed. The Fauquier Times reports the school system then set up an advisory committee to review the processes.

No books have been removed or restricted, the school system said. But, parents can review what the libraries offer at fcps1library.follettdestiny.com and can let librarians know whether something should be restricted for their kids.
