CMS Investigating Complaints About Book Parents Say Is Inappropriate

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said it is looking into complaints about a novel ninth grade students are required to read.

The booked is called “The Girl Who Fell from the Sky,” and some parents read sexually explicit passages from the book at the CMS board meeting Tuesday night. They asked the district how it was selected.

“The book addresses some important things but there are many other choices in literature that are more appropriate and I am begging you to do that and to get this book out of the classroom,” said parent Brooke Weiss.

The book is described by Barnes and Noble as a searing and heart-wrenching portrait of a young biracial girl dealing with society’s ideas of race and class.

Channel 9 has reached out to CMS and a spokesperson said they are looking into the situation.
