VIDEO: Moms for Liberty calls for action against CCSD teacher, Assemblyman Reuben D'Silva
Moms for Liberty Nevada is calling for action against a Clark County School District teacher who also serves in the Nevada Assembly.
The group, known to many as a conservative parental rights group, is demanding consequences for Reuben D'Silva, a history teacher at Rancho High School and a Democratic member of the Nevada Assembly. Moms For Liberty claims D’Silva is pushing a political agenda onto students by encouraging participation in recent student-led anti-ICE protests across the Las Vegas valley.
The criticism stems from a social media post made by D’Silva last week following protests.
In the Instagram post, D’Silva said in part, “We strive every day in these classrooms, trying to get information over to the kids, trying to educate our young people, to get them ready for participatory democracy. That is exactly what they did today. They felt very strongly about an issue, and they got out there, and they protested peacefully.”
Yadusha Jones, chairperson of Moms for Liberty Nevada, said D’Silva’s comments crossed a line.
"He's politically grandstanding to push an agenda off of his political agenda," said Jones. "This has absolutely nothing to do with education. This is not in the education curriculum for CCSD. Not one single parent or CCSD agreed to talk about anti-ICE, or ICE in general, back when they agreed to the curriculum for our children."
Jones believes D'Silva put teens at risk through his comments
"He's taking his title teacher and pushing these kids out there in danger," she said. "When you're saying anti-ICE, you're saying anti-law, you're saying anti-order, you're saying pro danger."
Moms For Liberty Nevada created a call for action against D'Silva, starting at the Clark County School District level, demanding he be removed from CCSD.
"If you look at his social media over the last past years, his social media is not separated when it comes to politics, education and private," said Jones. "It's all clumped up together. Moms For Liberty also wants the Nevada Legislature to investigate."
D’Silva, who has taught at Rancho High School for more than a decade and has served in the Nevada Assembly since 2022, responded to the allegations Tuesday.
When asked whether he has ever encouraged students — either in the classroom or through social media — to participate in anti-ICE protests, D’Silva denied the claim.
“Never. Not one time. Not one time,” D’Silva said.
He emphasized that the social media post was made outside of his contracted work hours and did not mention ICE.
“They’re perpetuating this sort of story that I was talking about personal politics in the classroom, that I was mentioning my personal sort of takes on stances in the classroom. And that is- my question is what evidence do you have of that?” D’Silva said
He says the focus was on teaching students about the freedom of expression.
"We have a long, centuries-long history of protests, of course, but decades-long history of high school walkouts in this country," said D'Silva. "And we even studied it. It's part of the actual curriculum."
D'Silva also responded to the group's call to remove him from his positions.
"I think that they're crazy for even asking that question," said D'Silva. "You know that there's -- that can't be done, you know, for what I did, you know, and it just goes to show that a lot of these people leading organizations like Moms For Liberty have a lot to learn about the U.S. Constitution."
He said the recent student anti-ICE protests were fully student-organized and that he would have shared the same message had students been protesting in support of a conservative cause.
Moms for Liberty Nevada said its members plan to attend the next Clark County School District board meeting to voice their concerns. Jones also said she plans to reach out directly to D’Silva, though she had not done so as of Tuesday afternoon.
