Moms for Liberty county founder, challenger meet in runoff for State School Board seat

The race for the Republican nominee to represent North Alabama on the state school board is headed to a runoff.

Emily Jones received 41% of the vote in an unofficial tally for the District 8 State School Board seat. Second-place finisher William Matthews received 31% of the vote and 10-year City of Madison Board of Education member Connie Spears received 27% of the vote. A candidate must receive more than 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff. The GOP runoff is set for June 16.

23,682 votes were cast.

District 8 covers Limestone, Madison and DeKalb counties. The seat is currently held by Republican Wayne Reynolds, who is retiring.Jones is chair and founder of the Madison County chapter of Moms of Liberty, an organization that campaigns against what they consider inappropriate school material.
