Constitution Day
Constitution Day, officially known as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, is observed every year on September 17. The day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. It also honors the many people who have become U.S. citizens through birth or naturalization.
Why September 17 Matters
September 17 marks the day the delegates signed the Constitution that established the foundation of the United States government. Constitution Day is also an opportunity to recognize what citizenship means and to celebrate the rights, responsibilities, and freedoms that come with being an American.
The observance has evolved over the years. It began as “I Am an American Day” in 1940, became Citizenship Day in 1952, and was officially expanded and renamed Constitution Day and Citizenship Day in 2004.
September 17 also marks the beginning of Constitution Week, which continues through September 23.
How Constitution Day Is Observed
Schools and educational institutions that receive federal funding are required to provide an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for their students on or around September 17. These programs give students an opportunity to learn about the Constitution, the founding of our country, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Federal agencies and courts also recognize the day through educational programs, civic discussions, and naturalization ceremonies welcoming new Americans.
There are many free resources available for students, teachers, and families through organizations such as the National Constitution Center and the U.S. Department of Education.
Constitution Day is more than a day to remember a historic document. It is a chance to reflect on the principles that shaped our nation and to appreciate the rights and responsibilities that come with being a citizen.

Moms for Liberty welcomes all that have a desire to stand up for parental rights at all levels of government.
Our founders are Tiffany and Tina, moms on a mission to stoke the fires of liberty. As former school board members, they witnessed how short-sighted and destructive policies directly hurt children and families. Now they are using their first-hand knowledge and experience to unite parents who are ready to fight those that stand in the way of liberty.
