Lists of Books in Rapid City Area School Libraries

 Are we book banners? Many social media accounts, organizations, and individuals would label us that way. Books contain ideas, and a society that bans ideas is well on its way to the totalitarianism Moms for Liberty is trying to avoid. However, we believe that selecting appropriate content based on age and setting is not the same as book banning. It is our responsibility as teachers, librarians, administrators, and parents.

In addition, we believe that the lines between teaching and parenting have been blurred, to the detriment of our children and families. There are controversial issues, such as transgender ideology, racism, and homosexual marriage that are best dealt with in the home. Each parent knows their family's value system and what their individual child can handle. Some books listed here are being challenged, some are listed so parents can be aware of their presence and decide what is best for their children.

Jack Not Jackie by Erica Silverman- a little girl has a younger sister who claims she is a boy. She is allowed to socially transition by her parents, included using a new name and pronouns, cutting her hair short, and wearing boy clothes. We challenged this book as well as Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash. The committee assembled to review the book was made up of school staff and the same community volunteers who already contribute to selection of library materials, rather than being opened to the whole community. The decision cited the ALA as a reason to keep the books, an organization we know has become captured by  Marxist ideology They emphasized the good aspects of the books without addressing the blatant sexuality, and tried to justify them using the three-pronged obscenity test established in the Miller vs California case which applies to adults only and shouldn't be used to determine what is appropriate for children. The committee also stated that parents should be able to talk with their children and decide for themselves what their children are allowed to read, but provided no suggestions for how to inform parents of the presence of these books in the schools or when their children had checked them out. We do appreciate the school removing the other two series by this author, which are even more explicit, but the committee's response that we should essentially sit down and trust the experts is unwarranted.
