NC Legislature Overrides Veto!

On July 29, 2025, the NC Legislature voted to override the governor’s veto, making HB805 law. Thank you to all who called, emailed and went to the legislature.

What HB 805 Accomplishes:

  1. Officially recognizing two sexes in NC law — male and female — based on biology.
  2. Protects women and children from sexual exploitation by the porn industry.
  3. Prohibits the use of NC taxpayer dollars for gender transitions.
  4. Expands the ability for individuals who have suffered harm from gender transition procedures to sue for medical malpractice.
  5. Allows parents to opt their children out of sexually explicit materials in public school curriculum and libraries.
  6. Protects girls in NC public schools from being forced to share sleeping spaces with boys while on field trips.
  7. Adds clarity to existing laws governing “sex-changes” on birth certificate.

OPT OUT August: Know Your Rights

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor affirmed what parents have known all along: we do not forfeit our rights at the school door. The ruling made it clear that parents have a constitutional right to guide their children’s upbringing, including opting them out of materials that conflict with their values. To help you, here are a few resources:

You will not hear about this from WCPSS or your child’s school. But did you know that you can opt out of vaccinations for medical and religious reasons? For medical reasons there is a form that you will need to have your doctor complete. For religious reasons there is NO FORM that is specified or required in NC General Statue.  All you need is a written statement including name, date of birth and reason. Statements DO NOT need to be notarized or signed by any other authority figure.

For more information and links to NC general statute see the NCDHHS website.

Legislative Update

There are a couple bills that were vetoed by the governor, HB171 and SB227 regarding DEI.  These bills are on the schedule at the end of August.  Please call and/ or email your legislators about these bills to encourage overriding the governor's veto.

  • HB171 - Equality in State Agencies/Prohibition on DEI is an act to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives from state and local government.
  • SB227 – Eliminating DEI in Public Education is an act to align with President Trump’s January 2025 executive order regarding DEI initiatives. The act will prohibit public K‑12 schools from endorsing or promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
