Three Alabama lawmakers have formally pledged their support for parental rights. Moms for Liberty declared June Parental Rights Month, bringing attention to and celebrating the 100th anniversary of Pierce v Society of Sisters.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in that case that parents have the right and responsibility to choose the school that's best for their children with Justice Clark McReynolds saying, "The child is not the mere creature of the State; those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations."

According to a press release by Moms for Liberty Madison County chair Emily Jones, State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur), State Rep. Parker Moore (R-Hartselle) and State Rep. Ernie Yarbrough (R-Trinity) all celebrated the month by signing a pledge to support parents' rights.

"These three men are stepping forward to say what many parents have been praying for: that elected officials will defend the rights of families, not bypass them. This is smart policy and smart politics," Jones said in the statement.

Yarbrough was unequivocal in his support, saying, "One of the hallmarks of America is the defense of the family as defined in the Holy Bible. God's definitions for the family not only give us a clear understanding of who we are but how we are to operate as family units. The family is the most basic unit where faith, morality, respect, and character are formed. I'm proud to stand with Moms For Liberty and unapologetically declare that in Alabama we will defend the God-ordained institution of the family and parental rights in the raising, guiding, and nurturing of Alabama's children."

The pledge states, "I pledge to honor the fundamental rights of parents including, but not limited to the right to direct the education, medical care, and moral upbringing of their children. I pledge to advance policies that strengthen parental involvement and decision-making, increase transparency, defend against government overreach, and secure parental rights at all levels of government."
